My New Job

After much deliberation, prayer, justifying, and coaxing my 2 year old, I have taken on a new job. I have been playing for the Las Vegas Mormon Youth Symphony and Chorus for the past 3 years that we have been living here. It's been good for me to have a musical outlet that I get paid for. Well, my stint has come to an end. With Jon working full time, going to school full time, being in the YM Presidency, and trying to still be a full time dad and husband, I have felt like I needed to do a few things to help him out. One thing being to quit my gig with MoYo. But, we've enjoyed the small income I have had from this.

So, I am starting to give piano lessons again. Yes, starting June 8, Yates Music Studio will be open for business. I am only taking on a few students to start, just to see how well Jocey will handle an hour each day on her own. Then if she does well, we'll increase that to two. I'm pretty excited and I already have 3 students with 3 in the works. And my hubby is so awesome, he's given me a great deal on getting my brochures printed out. They look so nice and professional.

When I was in college, I majored in Piano Pedagogy. I learned a few things about running a studio, and one of those things was having a brochure. Now I just have to write up the contracts, start buying flash cards (mine are something like 20 years old?), pencils, sticky notes, etc. I'm so grateful my parents encouraged me to learn the piano growing up, and supported me in teaching piano while I was in high school. It gives me a valuable set of skills while being a SAHM.

While we were in Evanston a few weeks ago, my sister took these pictures for me to use in my brochure. Those little hands are none other than my sweet little Jocey. She already loves music.

That is exciting Cat! I took piano when I was younger but didn't stick with it. I've always regretted that! How young are your students starting? Maybe sometime Hannah would be interested. Good luck!

Allison, I'm taking them as young as 5. Isn't she 4? One more year and I'd love to have Hannah. We'll chat.

HA HA HA!! CAREFUL!! As soon as you mention lessons, people crawl out of the woodwork! I already have a waiting list a mile long for when we get into our home. I won't do it where we live now. Ok, well I have one, but I won't take on what I normally do. Good luck with it! You'll love it! Good luck with Jocey too. It get's a little challenging!

You'll be such a good teacher. I wish we lived closer, I'd send my girls. They don't seem to pay attention when I try to teach them! :)

Cat, I've been teaching for a few years, and we're looking at taking a break -- I've got a little guy that just needs more attention from the Mama while he's at home from school. But I just wanted to mention, my mom teaches in Evanston, and she LOVES TCW (Three Crazy Women) for flashcards and games. I'm not sure how often, but she uses the games for a Piano Party every little while (once or twice quarterly), and the kids love it. Let me know if you want more info. Good luck!
