Enter my mother-in-law and my good friend, Melanie. When my mother-in-law told me about this book, I kind of shrugged it off. But then Melanie posted an entry on her blog about the book and the system it gives you help keep your house clean and keep your sanity at the same time. This is Melanie's entry. And here is my little black box (sorry about the picture from the couch, that's what happens when you have the stomach flu!):
Inside this little black box are cards. I have divided the cards into categories: days of the week and months of the year (so, I have 19 categories in all):
My cards are as follows: Daily cards, Weekly cards, Bi-Weekly cards, and Six-Month cards:
On one of these cards, I have listed chores for myself that I need to complete every day (like cleaning necessary parts of my kitchen, making beds, cleaning bathroom counters) and the amount of time each chore takes. I put a copy of this card behind every day of the week tab. I also have a card that gives me a list of things I am "allowed" to do at the end of each day, by myself (exercise, blog, read, etc.).
I also have bi-weekly and weekly cards. Bi-weekly, I do laundry, so I made 2 cards and put them behind the days that I know I do laundry, again with the amount of time it takes to do one load. For each day of the week, I have given myself chores to do (I like to split mine up per room) that completes BASIC cleaning of the house, errands, etc. Those are my weekly cards.
Every six months, I complete deep cleaning of a room (which takes roughly 2 hours and includes cleaning the carpet in that room!). This DOES NOT include basic cleaning tasks that I should have already done. So, instead of deep cleaning my house every quarter, I only do it twice a year now, but it should stay as clean! And each month, I have a card that allows me to "indulge" in an activity that I don't normally do (hang out with a friend, get a massage, buy a magazine, go off of my diet - after I have the baby of course). Finally, I have a Yearly card where I do chores that only need to be done once - aka, defrost and clean out freezer, clean the fridge coils, etc.
I'm really hoping that this will help me be less stressed out when Caylee comes, because I don't foresee me just giving up on cleaning. If anyone has experience with this system, please let me know what you think of it. If you are interested in doing this, and don't want to do all the research/work, I can send you the copy of my cards. Hey, I copied the idea from Melanie, so can you!

It sounds complicated!!! i think its the getting it all set up part that overwhelms me.. id love a copy of your cards!!
This sounds amazing. I have my weekly chores divided between my weekdays, so that my house is nice and clean most of the time. It is the deep cleaning stuff that I put off!
I also put in a load of laundry after the boys shower and move it to the dryer before I go to bed. Then, every morning, I fold that load and put 1 more in (Clothes, or towels or bedding), so each day I only have to fold 2 loads of laundry, instead of 8-10 twice a week. I love this schedule and because it stays the same, I know what to expect each day.
I need to get this book! Thanks for the idea. :)
I'm so glad you liked "the system". It really, REALLY changed my life, and I love how much simpler it makes my life. I wish I could be like you and be so organized...I have to have the cards to tell me what to do or else I'm just overwhelmed and I play on the computer all day! :)
Mel, my life is so called organized because I have ONE child. Hence the reason I am so excited for this - because I know that having a toddler and a newborn is going to drastically change the way I do things. :) My biggest problem is ONLY doing what is on my card for that day.
WoW!! I had no idea you were clean freak. Although, your house was very clean at the party :P I think this is a great idea. It does get tough when you have more than one kid. I still have to find time just to take a shower let alone clean. I'd have to admit that most of the time my house is messy. When I know someone is coming over I will clean for them. I know thats bad. But I like your Black Box idea. That way you get something accomplished and feel good throughout the day. Take care. Sorry your sick. Feel better.
Wow, that is pretty intense. However, I think I could stand for something like that:). I am currently working on my own "control journal" have you ever heard of fly lady?
Really I laughed so hard as I read your post because I can relate in so many ways. I work so hard to keep my home clean, like a temple. But it can be so overwhelming and I know it will only become more so as the baby comes along. Wish me luck.
I love the black box and i'll have to let you know how the whole control journal goes.
I AM SO Interested! I need to read that book. See, my problem is that I'm not OCD and my house is more dirty than clean. I call it the Mona Lisa clean, where it looks clean on the surface, but if you got close you'd see that it's not. LOL. No, not LOL. It's embarrassing. Anyway, I find if I'm on a schedule of things that I have to do then I'm more likely to keep up with it. If I know that I have to clean the bathroom and mop the floor before I can read then I'm happily doing my chores so I can get to my book. But when I'm not on a schedule I find myself reading too much and getting the Mona Lisa house I don't enjoy. So send it my way. I'm going to see if our library carries that book too. AND just a random question. I know you do your own layouts. Do you use photo shop? Or what do you use?
thanks, Laura
Laura, I use PowerPoint, then save the slides as a JPEG. The 2007+ versions of Office allow you to do that now.
