Flash, Bang

Last night, we had a little bit of excitement. Jon and I were watching "The Dark Knight" downstairs while Jon's mom was preparing to go to California today upstairs. Jocey was asleep, all was right with the world. We were in a pretty intense part of the movie, when we heard a really loud "BANG!" My first thought was, "Did Jocey fall out of bed?" and then "Did Janalynn drop something?" I glanced towards our back window, when there was another "BANG!" and I saw a flash to go along with it!

Okay, so that is not normal, and we almost immediately knew it was gunfire. For me to be able to see the flash with it, we knew it was very close, maybe in the backyard just next door to us. We ran upstairs, I grabbed Jocey and took her into Jon's office/Janalynn's room, where we hit the deck. Jon went into Jocey's room, which overlooks our backyard, to see if he could see anyone. I grabbed the phone, dialed 911, and told the operator about what we heard and saw. She got all the info and said the officers would be here shortly.

After I got off the phone, I asked Jon if he could see anything, and he said, "I don't think it was a gun." "How could it NOT be a gun? It definitely wasn't a firework, too loud and too low. If it was anything related, it had to be an M80!" "I don't think it was either." "Um, okay..." I crawled into our room so I could get a sweater for when the police came, and too a peek out into the street. There was a police SUV, a white van with a black box on the top, and people starting to come out of their homes. The van kind of looked like a television crew because the tree was obscuring the view slightly. I told Jon that people were coming out, so he decided to head out as well and get an idea of what happened.

He was gone for a few minutes, and when he came back in, this was his story:

There were 2 white vans out there, filled with SWAT members (I guess the black box on top is an A/C unit to keep them cool).
The flash/bang was them blowing the doors in of the house 2 doors down from us (explains why it was so loud and we could see the flash).
They were going in to get a couple of drug dealers that were living there! JUST TWO HOUSES AWAY FROM US!

After this has happened, I am definitely wanting to get out of this neighborhood. This isn't the first time we've had problems with drug dealers here, and apparently, there are more. I'm just glad that we are all okay, and that it wasn't a gun. I'm also glad that the police are aware of things going on here and that we aren't on our own. Finally I feel like my tax dollars are being put to good use.

Goodness! Was it our old rental! How scary! The crazy thing is that it could happen in any neighborhood! Glad you are all right! We haven't had any SWAT teams in our neighborhood yet and there is a house for rent/sale down the street. We already know you are good neighbhors.....come anytime!

How scary!!! I'm surprised this happened in your neighborhood and not ours though ... i'm still pretty positive we're as ghetto as it get's, despite your recent drug bust. When you hear that helicopter hovering overhead, with it's spotlight in motion ... that's usually our neighborhood they're looking at. We're too scared to even join the neighborhood watch, for fear of what we might discover! =(

Holy crap! How scary. I'm glad that you guys are alright. Thank goodness for the police. I always get upset when people bash on the cops...because, you know the police are the first ones the bashers call when they're in trouble.
